Mental Maths for a Faster Clock
Every Daily is timed, and at the top of a leaderboard the difference between players is rarely insight — it is arithmetic speed. These are the shortcuts worth drilling.
Know your complements to 37
The fastest players do not compute the gap — they recognise it. Because every solution is an anchor plus a correction, knowing instantly what each common anchor still needs removes a whole step:
- 36 needs 1
- 35 needs 2
- 32 needs 5
- 30 needs 7
- 27 needs 10
- 25 needs 12
- 24 needs 13
- 42 needs −5
- 45 needs −8
Drill those nine and most boards resolve into a gap you can see rather than one you have to work out.
The six times table, properly
Sixes dominate this game — the target sits one above 6*6, and 6 is the largest face. If any single table is worth being instant on, it is this one.
6*2 = 12,6*3 = 18,6*4 = 24,6*5 = 30,6*6 = 366*7 = 42,6*8 = 48,6*9 = 54— reachable when a bracket supplies the second factor.
That second line matters more than it looks. A bracket can hold any sum your dice can build, so (4+3)*6 = 42 and (5+4)*6 = 54 are both one move away — and both are useful overshoot anchors.
Spot the factors first
Before doing any arithmetic, scan the board for numbers that multiply into the thirties or low forties. This costs a second and often hands you the answer.
- Do you have two sixes? You have 36. Find one unit.
- Do you have a 6 and a 5? You have 30. Find seven.
- Do you have three dice summing to 6, 7 or 9? A bracket times your largest face lands in range.
- Do you have a matching pair? That is a free 1 (divide) or 0 (subtract) whenever you need to spend dice.
Subtract by adding up
When you overshoot and need to come down, most people subtract downwards and make mistakes. It is faster and more reliable to count up from 37 to where you are.
If you are at 45, do not compute 45 − 37. Ask what gets you from 37 to 45 — that is 8, and 8 is what you need to remove. Same answer, far fewer slips under time pressure.
Check parity before you commit
37 is odd. That single fact can rule out a whole line of attack in about two seconds, before you have wasted thirty on it.
An even anchor needs an odd correction, and an odd anchor needs an even one. If you have anchored on 6*6 = 36 — even — and every die you have left is even, no amount of adding and subtracting them will produce the odd number 1 that you need. You will need a division, or a bracket, or a different anchor. Spotting that immediately is worth more than any arithmetic shortcut on this page.
- Even + even = even. Odd + odd = even. Even + odd = odd.
- Even × anything = even. Only odd × odd stays odd.
- Division is the escape hatch:
6/2turns an even pair into an odd 3.
A five-minute drill
If you want to actually get faster rather than just read about it, this is the routine that works. It takes five minutes and it targets recognition rather than arithmetic.
- Open a practice round — untimed, unlimited rolls, no penalty for a wrong turn.
- Roll, and give yourself ten seconds to name an anchor out loud before touching anything. Do not solve it; just pick the big term.
- Now solve it however long it takes. The point is that the anchor was chosen deliberately rather than stumbled into.
- Repeat ten times. Most people find their anchor choice becomes near-instant within two or three sessions.
