The Three Modes and the Two Rounds
People often describe 37 as having "modes and a daily challenge". That is not quite the shape of it. There are three difficulty tiers, and each tier has two rounds — an untimed practice round and its own timed Daily. Six ways to play in total.
The shape of it
The Daily is not a fourth mode. It is a round type that every tier has. So Easy has a Daily, Challenge has a Daily, and Expert has a Daily — three separate puzzles every day, each with its own leaderboard and its own streak.
| Tier | Power dice | Perfect solve required | Rounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | No | No | Practice + its own Daily |
| Challenge | Yes | No | Practice + its own Daily |
| Expert | Yes | Yes | Practice + its own Daily |
The three tiers
Easy
Seven white dice and one job: reach 37. No power-dice rules at all.
Challenge
The same board with three coloured power dice. Use two of the three correctly for a Valid solve; all three makes it Perfect.
Expert
Challenge’s board, judged strictly. Only a Perfect solve counts — two of three is a miss, not a win.
An Easy board — seven white dice, no colours, no extra rules:
- 5
- 4
- 3
- 2
- 6
- 1
- 2
A Challenge or Expert board — the same seven faces, but three of them are power dice:
- 5
- 4
- 3
- 2
- 6
- 1
- 2
The jump that catches people out is Challenge to Expert. The board is identical — same seven dice, same three colours. What changes is the judging: in Challenge a two-of-three solve is a win that simply is not Perfect, while in Expert the same equation is not a solve at all.
The two rounds
Practice
Untimed, unlimited rounds, new dice whenever you want them. Nothing is ranked and nothing is at stake.
The Daily
One puzzle, one attempt, in one sitting. Everyone playing that tier gets the same seven dice, and the clock is running.
Practice is where you should learn a tier. It is untimed and unlimited on purpose — there is no cost to a wrong turn, and no clock rewarding you for guessing.
The three Dailies
Each Daily is its own puzzle with its own seven dice. Everyone in the world playing that tier on that day gets the same board.
Easy Daily
Seven white dice, timed, once a day. No power dice, so no Perfect solve and no Puzzle Pieces — its rewards are its streak and its own leaderboard.
Daily Challenge
The flagship round. Power dice on, timed, once a day. A Perfect solve here is what earns a Puzzle Piece.
Expert Daily
The same dice as everyone else, judged strictly: only a Perfect solve counts, and the clock is running.
Separate streaks — the part most people get wrong
Each Daily keeps its own streak and its own leaderboard. Playing only the Easy Daily every day builds an Easy streak; skipping the Expert Daily does not break it.
So you are never punished for not playing all three. Pick the tier you actually want and keep that streak alive.
All three Dailies refresh at midnight Eastern Time, and each is one attempt in one sitting — leaving mid-puzzle counts as a forfeit.
Puzzle Pieces
A Perfect solve — all three power dice used correctly — is what earns a Puzzle Piece. Because Easy deals seven white dice, a Perfect solve is not merely hard there, it is arithmetically impossible, so the Easy Daily awards no Pieces. Its rewards are its streak and its leaderboard place.
Puzzle Pieces are a single collectible, not three kinds. Collecting them crosses badge tiers:
| Badge tier | Puzzle Pieces |
|---|---|
| Bronze | 37 |
| Silver | 111 |
| Gold | 222 |
Those thresholds are not arbitrary. 111 is 37 × 3 and 222 is 37 × 6 — the repdigits that fall out of 37’s most famous property, which the why-37 page explains.
Which should you play?
- New to the game? Easy practice, until reaching 37 feels routine.
- Comfortable with the arithmetic? Challenge practice, to learn what the three colours demand — see the power-dice guide.
- Want a daily habit? Pick one tier’s Daily and keep that streak. You do not need to play all three.
- Want the hardest thing here? The Expert Daily. Perfect or nothing, against the clock.
